Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning
The Honourable Paul Lucas

MINERS THE CHAMPIONS WITH OVAL RESCUE

Acting Premier Paul Lucas today congratulated the mining industry for kicking a goal for the people of Gladstone by saving Marley Brown Oval.

The traditional home of rugby league in Gladstone was on the verge of being sold before a $3 million rescue package between coal companies and the State Government owned Gladstone Ports Corporation.

“This is a real win for the people of Gladstone and it’s great to see these mining companies putting money back into the community, that’s the benefit of having them here,” Mr Lucas said.

“I want to make sure everyone knows the companies that chipped in: BMA Coal, Ensham Resources, Felix Resources, Jellinbah Resources, Peabody Energy, Wesfarmers Coal and Xstrata Coal Australia.

“If you know someone who works for one of these companies you should go up and give them a pat on the back for doing the right thing by the community.

“Premier Anna Bligh kicked this off by asking the Gladstone Ports Corporation to chip in a million dollars and the mining companies have come with another $2 million.”

The Acting Premier visited Marley Brown Oval while in Gladstone for the Toward Q2 community forum, that will provide ideas to help shape Queensland’s future.

“The Gladstone Regional Council will also play an important role as the administrator of Marley Brown Oval as a sporting venue into the future,” said Mr Lucas.

“The Premier was very clear this land must be held in perpetuity for the sole purpose of sporting and recreational usage.

“This secures the Oval and means one of the city’s great gathering places will be retained.

“Gladstone is a rugby league town. One of the things that has always struck me about the Gladstone Community is the way they love their sport.

“Its not just about having a dynamic economy but also investing in facilities like Marley Brown Oval to provide lifestyle benefits as well.”
