The Queensland Government today recognised the exceptional contributions of four far north Queensland community members with Blueprint for the Bush Community Hero Awards.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt and Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall made the presentations today as part of the Ministerial Regional Community Forum at Smithfield in Cairns.

Mr Pitt said the awards recognised those Queenslanders who had gone above and beyond the call of duty to make their community a better place to live, work and raise a family.

“The Community Hero Awards are a Blueprint for the Bush initiative to honour and celebrate our fellow community members who continuously demonstrate tireless effort in making a difference to the lives of those around them,” Mr Pitt said.

“Peter Jackson has been a tireless worker on the local sporting scene for many years.

“Peter is the secretary of both the local Parents and Citizens Association and the Atherton Football Club, where he devotes plenty of his time to support the club’s 400 junior and senior players.

“Sven Madsen is Atherton’s longest-serving member of Meals on Wheels, with his contribution stretching back more than 20 years.

“He has made a tremendous contribution to improving the quality of life for elderly residents and he continues to volunteer his time to keep the local Meals on wheels operation running.

“Grant Philp hails from Wonga Beach and is dedicated to making the northern beaches a safer and more connected community. Grant is a rural fire fighter, and volunteers at local school, blue-light and netball discos.

“Grant is committed to promoting community activities on a grass roots level, and is involved in junior AFL and tae kwon do.”

Mr Wettenhall praised the fourth recipient, Peter Wilson, from Trinity Beach.

“For more than a decade, Peter has worked tirelessly to develop and maintain an award-winning community garden on the foreshore for the community and visitors to enjoy,” Mr Wettenhall said.

“Peter also established the community group, Trinity Beach Turtles, and regularly leads working bees that encourage residents of the area to come together.

“These shining members from far north Queensland are people who make us all proud to be Queenslanders.”

Mr Pitt said the awards were an opportunity for the Queensland Government to thank and recognise community-minded Queenslanders, as well as demonstrate the Government’s commitment to building stronger communities through increased liveability, sustainability and prosperity.
