Safer drive ahead for motorists in central west
Winton Shire Council has been awarded a $365,000 contract to reseal a section of Kennedy Developmental Road, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt announced today.
"A 7.4-kilometre section of Kennedy Developmental Road will be resealed over the coming months," Mr Pitt said.
"The funding will also be used for works such as pothole repairs and smoothing of edges, which will result in improved safety and freight efficiency."
The section of Kennedy Developmental Road to be upgraded is about 130 kilometres from Hughenden.
"Maintaining Queensland's regional roads is one of Main Roads' top priorities," Mr Pitt said.
Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan said Kennedy Developmental Road provided an important link between the popular tourist destinations and townships of Hughenden and Winton.
"With about 150 vehicles travelling along this road each day, of which 27 per cent are heavy vehicles, it is essential the road is maintained," Mrs Kiernan said.
"This upgrade is another example of Main Roads keeping to its commitment to keeping Queensland connected."
Mrs Kiernan said maintenance contracts such as this also enabled Main Roads to help boost employment in rural areas throughout the state.
"Ensuring that we have local staff with the right skills, expertise and knowledge to maintain roads in their own areas is vital for Main Roads," she said.
"Preparation work will be undertaken in October and November 2008, and resealing will commence in February 2009."
