Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Holiday driver’s urged to stay alert with Driver Reviver
Transport Minister John Mickel today urged drivers to put road safety first and to plan regular rest stops as part of their holiday motoring.
Queensland’s Driver Reviver stations will be open through the September school holidays from this weekend to provide friendly places for drivers to stop, revive and survive.
“There is nothing more important when driving than arriving safely at your destination,” Mr Mickel said.
“The Queensland road toll stands at 242 – that is 242 sons and daughters, 242 mothers and fathers, 242 friends and co-workers; the impact of these fatalities is felt throughout the community.
“We must remember that road safety is about life saving, not revenue raising.
“The Driver Reviver stops are at 31 strategic locations across the State, including along the Bruce Highway and the Cunningham Highway.
“Volunteers from local communities offer a free cuppa, a biscuit, a friendly chat and a place to rest and revive.
“They provide regular rest stops to avoid fatigue, and they may save your life.
“These holidays there will be around 1600 volunteers giving up their own time to staff Driver Reviver sites and promote road safety.
"It is vital not to drive when you are tired – especially during school holidays when there are so many loved ones being carried on the roads,” he said.
The Minister offered the following tips for drivers:
• get a good night's sleep, and avoid alcohol the night before heading off to your destination.
• plan your trip to include 15 minute breaks every two hours and eat properly.
• make sure all passengers are properly restrained.
• take the time to pack properly and ensure all loose objects are secure, especially in towed caravans and trailers.
• take regular breaks - you should stop for at least 15 minutes every two hours.
The Driver Reviver sites will operate at varying times from this Friday, September 19, until the end of school holidays on Sunday, October 5 and is supported nationally by Bushells Tea.
