Queensland’s status as an emerging design powerhouse has attracted more than 4000 of Australia’s leading architects, designers and design enthusiasts to tomorrow’s (20 Sept) Brisbane Indesign.

Arts Minister Rod Welford said Brisbane Indesign was a unique opportunity for local designers to showcase their work to national and international buyers, design professionals and a growing legion of Queensland design fans.

“First held last year, Brisbane Indesign was such a success the Indesign Group organised a second event for 2008 and plan to make Brisbane Indesign biennial from 2010,” Mr Welford said.

“Our Government, through Arts Queensland, is supporting Indesign’s vision with funding of $80,000 over four years toward the event.

“Brisbane Indesign presents Queensland designers and design industry professionals with the chance to network, sample products and develop ideas and relationships with others in the industry.

“Buses carrying Indesign delegates will be visiting galleries, showrooms and studios throughout the inner-city to gain an insight into the state’s design talent and retailers.

“The feedback from the first Brisbane Indesign in 2007 was overwhelmingly positive, generating strong networking and partnership opportunities in the design community.”

Mr Welford said supporting Brisbane Indesign was part of the Bligh Government’s $3 million initiative Designing Queensland which aims to make the state a dynamic centre for Asia-Pacific design.

“Designing Queensland also includes $1.5 million toward a major triennial design event focusing on the Asia-Pacific region commencing in 2009, a boost in State Government funding for the Smart State Designer of the Year award, from $10,000 to $50,000, and a scholarship for teachers to study at the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York,” he said.

“The initiative recognises that good, smart design is increasingly playing a major role in our everyday lives as well as becoming a key driver for our economy.”
