Tenders called for next stage of Joint Levee Road

The Bligh Government has called for tenders for stage two of the much-anticipated $14.2 million Joint Levee Road project.

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the State Government had committed to building the new 1.5kilometre deviation from Sams Road through to the Kooyong intersection at Barnes Creek Road in March 2006 for the many benefits it would provide to north Mackay.

Stage one of the Joint Levee Road project involved the formation of the first half of the embankment and stage two will include the formation of the second embankment, followed by another settlement period.

Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin said when completed, the Joint Levee Road would not only reduce the number of heavy vehicles on Malcomson Street, it would provide a combined road and flood mitigation levee.

"Ultimately, the Joint Levee Road will halve the amount of local traffic on Malcomson Street and reduce travel times to the port of Mackay, saving money for motorists through reduced fuel usage and reducing carbon emissions," Mr Mulherin said.

“Following the tender process, stage two is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2009,” he said.

The third stage, involving the road construction, will follow closely with the entire project due to be completed in late 2009, weather permitting.

"The extensive community consultation in the lead-up to the project is further evidence of Main Roads' desire to engage with the community on road concerns," Mr Pitt said.

"It also demonstrates the Bligh Government's commitment to building an efficient and safe transport and traffic network to allow Mackay to prosper and grow."

Main Roads also recently completed a $100,000 asphalt resurfacing project on Malcomson Street to prolong the life of the existing road surface before the completion of the Joint Levee Road, when a full upgrade of Malcomson Street will occur.

"The Joint Levee Road will be a great asset to the community and once it is complete it will minimise any disruption to traffic when work is undertaken on Malcomson Street," Mr Pitt said.

Tenders for stage two of the Joint Levee Road project will close in October.

The Mackay region is experiencing record levels of investment in road infrastructure with the Bligh Government continuing to improve the state-controlled road network.

As well as the Joint Levee Road project, a $17 million project to duplicate Mackay–Bucasia Road is due for completion in early 2009, which will improve access to Mackay's booming northern beaches.

Other major projects underway in the Mackay/ Whitsunday region include the $127.9 million Forgan Bridge replacement and the $33.6 million Hospital Bridge project.
