Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning
The Honourable Paul Lucas

EXPERT DESIGN PANEL FOR MAJOR PROJECTS

The Bligh Government today announced plans to establish a Board for Urban Places to advise on the design aspects of major infrastructure and urban planning projects.

Acting Premier Paul Lucas today told the Planning Institute of Australia State Conference the panel of design experts will be available to provide independent advice to the State Government and Councils on how to improve projects.

“Whether it be buildings, infrastructure projects or even whole new communities, this will make sure the focus in on creating more places and public spaces Queenslanders can enjoy,” said Mr Lucas.

“As our cities and towns become more densely populated the focus has to be on good design to improve quality of life.

“That’s why this board isn’t about approving projects or taking town planning powers from Councils, but providing expert advice right at the start when they’re being designed.

“Its important we get things right up front, putting extra effort into designing a community is a hell of a lot less expensive than dealing with social problems down the track.

“Not only is this quality of life valued by existing residents, it is an increasingly important factor as towns and cities compete for investment and skilled workers.

“For example, by making streets and neighbourhoods safer, better connected and more attractive, good urban design can create more walkable cities.

“There are flow on benefits in custom for businesses, reduced environmental costs and healthier people. “

The new board will provide general and project-specific advice on urban design, planning, architecture, landscape architecture, sustainability and built environment issues.

Urban design works at a number of scales: within individual sites or streets, within neighbourhoods, across the wider town or city, and its connections with the region.

Expressions of interest will shortly be called from people with the relevant skills and experience wishing to become members of the board, which will be chaired by the newly appointed Government Architect Philip Follent.
