Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson
Construction is set to start on a new high voltage powerline and substation which will boost power supply to the Rockhampton region.
Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said Powerlink Queensland’s new high voltage powerline would link the Bouldercombe substation to a new substation at Pandoin, in Glenlee.
Mr Wilson said forecast strong growth in the area was a main driver behind the project.
“Peak electricity demand in Rockhampton is expected to grow at more than three per cent per year over the next 10 years. This is due to strong commercial and residential growth in the region,” Mr Wilson said.
Construction will start at the Pandoin substation in the next few weeks and later this year on the 38km powerline.
All construction work is expected to be completed by late 2009.
Powerlink Chief Executive Gordon Jardine said a comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement for the Bouldercombe to Pandoin project was finalised earlier this year.
It is available at www.powerlink.com.au
“As part of this environmental assessment, we have been talking with landowners whose properties are crossed by the existing easement,” Mr Jardine said.
“We will continue to work closely with residents and the local community to try and reduce any inconvenience as a result of the construction works and to keep them informed of upcoming activities.”
Mr Jardine said helicopters would be used during the final construction period to string the conductors, or powerline wires, between the steel towers.
“Neighbouring residents will be advised in advance of any helicopter activity associated with construction works through letterbox drops and/or public notices in local newspapers.”
