Brazen drug smuggling attempt foiled at Borallon prison

Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence says prison security has foiled a brazen attempt to lob a soccer ball-sized package of drugs, syringes and a mobile phone into Borallon Correctional Centre.

Ms Spence said: “This is one of the largest packages of contraband anyone has attempted to throw in to a Queensland prison in years.

“Last night at about 6.05 the perimeter fence alarm was triggered and a person was observed running from the perimeter.

“Dog squad officers and dogs tracked a scent to the bitumen road where the scent was lost.

“A search by dog squad and custodial staff located a wrapped package about the size of a soccer ball between two perimeter fences.

“Our system of fences is specifically designed to prevent these kinds of attempts and the contraband was in an area that could not be reached by prisoners.

“Prison officers opened the package and found a mobile phone and charger, 20 needles, 10 syringes; a small quantity of drugs believed to be ecstasy, a ziplock bag containing green leafy material, and 15 bottles of liquid believed to be steroids.

“Police from the Queensland Corrective Services Investigation Unit are investigating,” Ms Spence said.

Earlier this week the Bligh Government announced potential life bans for anyone attempting to smuggle contraband into Queensland jails.
