The Bligh Government will protect one of Queensland’s most famous and “toasted” industrial sites, the XXXX Brewery at Milton, from urban growing pains.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Paul Lucas said legislation is being prepared that will protect current operations at the iconic brewery.

“It is good for the environment and good planning to encourage developments around Milton railway station, but also important that the rights of a 130-year-old icon such as XXXX are protected,” said Mr Lucas.

“In the past Brisbane City Council has had to take action when people bought into units in Fortitude Valley, then complained about the very nature of the Valley itself and the nightlife.

“This legislation will not affect residents already coexisting with the brewery.

“It is designed for people who move into significantly higher density developments, to stop them from later complaining about the brewery across the road.

“I want to make it clear this does not in any way effect the brewery’s legal requirements to comply with its Environmental Protection Act licence, or liability for any physical or personal damage if there was an incident.

“This is simply about protecting the brewery from nuisance complaints about air, noise and lighting when new, higher density developments pop up, as long as the brewery is operating within its licence conditions.

“It should be self evident to anyone who buys next to a brewery, it will operate as a brewery.”

A handful of significantly higher density building proposals either approved or in the development pipeline have the potential to impact on existing Lion Nathan brewery operations at Milton.

Brisbane City Council today approved a mixed-use development over the Milton railway which would include a 30-storey residential high-rise tower.

“The Bligh Government welcomes this decision, redevelopment in existing urban areas is vital for South East Queensland to cope with population growth and avoid urban sprawl,” said Mr Lucas.

“Transit Oriented Developments like this are the way of the future, they put people and businesses right at the heart of our public transport system to combat congestion on our roads.”
