Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Eton Range safety works to improve skid resistance

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt today announced improvements would commence on the Eton Range next week (23 September) to boost safety for motorists.

Mr Pitt said the $180,000 project would see a new treatment laid over the road surface at the top of the Eton Range on the Peak Downs Highway to provide improved skid-resistance.

"Main Roads will place a high-friction cover treatment called calcined bauxite, over the top of the existing surface on sections of the Eton Range," Mr Pitt said.

"Safety is Main Roads' number one priority and treating the road surface with calcined bauxite will improve traction for all vehicles on the road, particularly heavy vehicles."

Sections of the range will be treated with calcined bauxite between Tuesday, 23 September and Saturday, 27 September.

Mr Pitt said the works were originally scheduled to take place from 17 September but were rescheduled after delays in transporting materials needed for the work.

"Work has also been reprogrammed to take place at night, which will mean significantly less disruptions to traffic," Mr Pitt said.

Traffic controllers will be in place to maintain a single lane on the Eton Range while the project takes place between 5pm and 6am.

Main Roads will minimise delays as much as possible, but motorists should be prepared for delays of up to 30 minutes throughout the improvements.

A maximum axle and load width restriction of 3.5 metres will be in place during these hours.

To ensure the safety of those on the road, including roadworkers, Main Roads is urging motorists to use caution, drive to road conditions and obey the direction of roadworkers and signage while works are underway.

Main Roads wishes to thank motorists for their patience during these works.
