Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries
The Honourable Tim Mulherin
Schoolkids To Meet Biosecurity Queensland’s Canine ‘Detectives’
Brisbane school kids will have a chance to meet with DPI&F biosecurity officers and their specially skilled canine investigators at Belmont State School next week, Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin has said.
“This will be an opportunity for the Belmont State School students understand more about animal welfare and how they can properly care for pets,” Mr Mulherin said.
“Dogs also play an important part in tackling biosecurity battles against pests like fire ants – some are specially trained to sniff out fire ants and their nests.”
Labrador Jake, chocolate Labrador Breeze, and labradoodle Smiley will be the stars of the day and will treat the years 3, 4 and 5 students to a 20 minute demonstration of their skills.
“This will also be a chance for kids to find out more about the importance of Biosecurity, that it is everyone’s business and to meet the dogs which have an important job helping farmers detect dangerous toxins and chemicals on their properties.”
Free kids packs will be also provided which include items like activity sheets and bookmarks.
The Belmont State School visit is part of the Animal Smile Program which teaches children a duty of care to animals.
A Biosecurity Emergency Response trailer will also be on display.
“These biosecurity trailers speed up response times when tackling a biosecurity challenge,” Mr Mulherin said.
“The trailer is one of 5 that allow Biosecurity teams to work effectively and efficiently in the field while they are responding to pest or disease concerns.”
The event is supported by the local Member for Chatsworth, Chris Bombolas MP.
“This is a great opportunity for the Belmont State School kids to learn more about pet care and how we keep our communities free of pests and disease,” Mr Bombolas said.
