Belmont ‘butterfly tree’ helps promote Disability Action Week

Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has unveiled a colourful ‘butterfly tree’ at Belmont State School to mark the start of Disability Action Week (14–20 September).

Visiting the school as part of the Bligh Government’s 10th Community Cabinet, Ms Nelson-Carr applauded the creativity and enthusiasm of students who participated in the butterfly tree project, a statewide Disability Action Week initiative.

“The theme for Disability Action Week this year is See beyond the Disability and butterflies are the perfect symbol – while most cannot hear and have limited vision – incredibly they can still navigate and travel vast distances,” she said.

“We all see the beauty in them beyond any disability they may have and this is the attitude Disability Action Week encourages us all to practice in our communities.

Local Member for Chatsworth Chris Bombolas joined Ms Nelson-Carr at the unveiling.

“I am delighted that Belmont State School students are participating in this project and putting their creative talents to good use,” Mr Bombolas said.

“I encourage other schools and community groups across Queensland to follow the school’s lead and create their own colourful butterfly tree to help celebrate diversity in our community and promote positive attitudes towards people with a disability.”

Disability Action Week is a chance to highlight the experiences, aspirations and contributions of people with a disability.

Minister Nelson-Carr yesterday launched the week at a family fun day in Townsville kicking off the week’s action-packed program.

Events ranging from art exhibitions and picnics in the park to community dinners and even a karaoke evening are among more than 100 events listed on the week’s official online calendar of events.

Tuesday’s Disability Action Week Awards in Brisbane are a highlight of the week-long festivities.
