The Honourable Robert Schwarten

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST CALLED FOR SALE OR LEASE OF GYMPIE FORESTRY CENTRE

The Queensland Government has called for expressions of interest for the sale or lease of the Gympie Forestry Conference and Training Centre, Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten announced today.

Mr Schwarten said expressions of interest were being sought from today with Project Services, a business unit of the Department of Public Works, managing the sale/lease process and CB Richard Ellis marketing the site.

“The Gympie Forestry Conference and Training Centre is located on approximately 4.123 hectares of land and includes conference, dining and recreation facilities as well as 60 accommodation rooms,” Mr Schwarten said.

“The Department of Public Works recognises the importance of the centre to the Gympie community therefore the expressions of interest process is aimed at encouraging private sector operators to take over the business as part of the sale process.”

The land and buildings on the site are owned by the Department of Public Works but have been leased by the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries since the 1990s. The site also includes the Gympie Woodworks Museum.

“With the Department of Primary Industries ceasing operations at the conference centre on September 30 and the centre not being part of the Department of Public Works’ core business, a decision has been made to offer the site for sale or lease,” Mr Schwarten said.

“As I announced in July, the site will be subdivided, subject to the Gympie Council’s approval, and the Woodworks Museum leased to the council on a peppercorn rent.

“The Department of Public Works will retain a portion of the balance property for continued occupancy and use by the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries as office and research facilities.

Mr Schwarten said the sale or lease of the conference centre was aimed at providing an opportunity for continuing the business to the private sector, in addition to creating employment opportunities in the local community.”
