Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Design contracts awarded for major Pacific Motorway upgrade project
The upgrade of the Pacific Motorway between Springwood South and Daisy Hill is a step closer, with the appointment of two contractors to finalise the design for the high priority project.
Queensland Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt, Federal Member for Rankin Craig Emerson and State Member for Springwood Barbara Stone announced today that contracts had been awarded to Leighton Contractors and Pacific CBR for the design of section B of the Pacific Motorway Transit Project.
Pacific CBR is a joint venture between Bielby Holdings, Albem Operations and JF Hull Holdings.
"Both contractors are now working to finalise designs to upgrade this 3.3km section of road, ahead of Main Roads selecting one contractor to build the project," Mr Pitt said.
"This innovative approach means that we can move quickly to start construction, with the best contractor for the job, once the designs have been completed."
Dr Emerson said the Queensland and Australian governments had each committed $455 million, for a total of $910 million, towards improving the Pacific Motorway on priority sections between the Gateway Motorway and Tugun.
He said the Pacific Motorway Transit Project would enhance the motorway's dual role as an important interstate freight corridor and a commuter traffic route, and would meet the transport needs of south-east Queensland for the next 30 years.
"The improvements are a long-term transport solution for the people of south-east Queensland," Dr Emerson said.
Ms Stone said the design contracts had been awarded after tenders were called on the open market.
She said motorists could look forward to a 2009 start to construction on section B between Springwood South and Daisy Hill.
"The Pacific Motorway Transit Project is broken up into three sections and this section – which includes the busy Loganlea Road and Paradise Road interchanges – is our top priority," she said.
"These interchanges are currently carrying about 100,000 vehicles each day.
"The upgrade will speed up travel times and improve public transport with new bus and transit lanes, improved access on and off the motorway, and the next stage of the V1 bikeway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast."
Mr Pitt said the improvements to the Springwood South–Daisy Hill section were expected to be completed by late 2010, weather permitting.
"The Pacific Motorway Transit Project will make best use of the road corridor and save motorists time by promoting smart transport options, such as car pooling, use of public transport and cycling,” he said.
