Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Sunshine Coast workforce set for job-ready workers
The Sunshine Coast’s aged care, medical administration, retail, hospitality and commercial cookery industries will benefit over the next 12 months as 70 local residents undertake accredited training and job preparation activities funded under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said employers are concerned about skills shortages within these industries and the project is one way the government is acting to address the concern.
“The Queensland Government has committed just under $150,000 to this project with a view to assisting jobseekers, employers and the wider community,” Mr Mickel said.
“Seventy participants consisting of parents and carers and young people will undergo core competency units that will provide them with the minimum skills set required by employers.
“Once employed, I expect participants will quickly develop practical skills to increase their prospects of sustaining long-term employment.”
CADET Group Australia Senior Training Services Manager De-Anne Richards said the project provides assistance with job searching, interview skills, resume writing and addressing selection criteria.
“We also encourage participants to engage in work experience using CADET’s extensive networks to approach organisations,” Ms Richards said.
“The aged care training includes a mandatory vocational placement which participants will enjoy and benefit from.
“Training will be delivered in Caloundra, Noosa and Maroochydore and a bus service will be available for those who require it.”
During 2008/09 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 15,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
