Q150 legacy infrastructure project a step closer to completion by Christmas

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt and Member for Kurwongbah Linda Lavarch today inspected progress on a Q150 Legacy Infrastructure and Moreton Bay Regional Council project at Pine Rivers Park.

The Queensland Government is contributing $1 million to the $3.6 million council project – the upgrade to the Outdoor Performing Arts venue – through the Queensland 150th Celebrations 2009 (Q150) Legacy Infrastructure Program.

Mrs Lavarch said it was no secret the popularity of the existing stage and amphitheatre at Pine Rivers had outgrown its size.

“The Moreton Bay region is part of the high-growth south east Queensland corner and home to more than 343,000 people. Its population is expected to reach more than 488,000 by 2026,” she said.

“In the lead-up to next year’s Q150 celebrations it’s important that the venue be upgraded so that it can continue to service the region’s population, now and in years to come.”

“First opened in 1997 for a Christmas concert and capacity crowd of 10,000, the venue has been the location of choice for a number of celebrations including Australia Day celebrations, car shows and a rock’ n’ roll concert.

Mr Pitt said as communities grew so did their need for recreational spaces for families such as the Outdoor Performing Arts venue at Pine Rivers Park.

“The good news is the upgraded venue will be open in time for this year’s Christmas concert and with works completed on the amphitheatre mound in November will be able to seat 15,000 people,” he said.

Mr Pitt said the Queensland Government was a proud supporter of this Q150 Legacy Infrastructure Project.

The Q150 Legacy Infrastructure program is a $100 million capital works program by the Queensland Government to help councils create legacies for their communities marking Queensland’s 150th anniversary.

Improvements to the venue include upgrades to the stage that will enable more diverse performances and better facilities for smaller events. A viewing platform is also being constructed with views east to the Bald Hills Flats and west to the D’Aguilar Range.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said the $3.6 million upgrade to Pine Rivers Park would create a major cultural hub for the region.

“Works will include a substantial upgrade to the amphitheatre and viewing areas making it a focal point for organised outdoor activities in the region,” Cr Sutherland said.

“Pine Rivers Park currently hosts many major events, so this upgrade will be warmly embraced by the tens of thousands of people who visit the park each year.”

Next year marks Queensland’s 150th anniversary of separation from New South Wales as a colony.
