Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Diversifying the Sunshine Coast workforce

An employment project on the Sunshine Coast will assist 50 local jobseekers, including people from a multicultural background, through accredited training, paid work placements and job preparation activities.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the $486,709 Skilling Queenslanders for Work project is a good investment in helping put people into jobs while increasing the cultural diversity of the workforce.

“Work placements are an effective opportunity for participants to develop practical skills and an understanding of Australian work practices,” Mr Mickel said.

“Participants on this project, coordinated by the Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre, will get the chance to complete 16 weeks of paid work undertaking administration duties with local organisations.

“Host organisations include Queensland Ambulance Service, Department of Communities, Sunshine Coast Regional Housing Council, Queensland Police Service, Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre, Education Queensland, Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry, Nambour Community Centre, Office of Fair Trading, Maroochy Water Watch, Sunshine Coast Environmental Council and Lions Emergency Accommodation Centre.”

Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre Inc. Manager Michael Henning said the job preparation component will focus on improving personal development and assisting participants with active job searching.

“Activities will encompass communication skills, building relationships and networks, managing change and conflict, setting goals, understanding Australian workplace expectations, career planning, writing resumes and addressing selection criteria.

“This project will also cover four modules of accredited training in basic computer operations.”

During 2008/09 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 15,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving assistance 71 per cent of participants are in employment or further training.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
