The Honourable Rod Welford

Deception Bay health concerns to be investigated

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said concerns raised about the incidence of cancer amongst staff at Deception Bay State High School would be thoroughly investigated.

“Our Government is treating seriously health concerns expressed by staff at Deception Bay State High School,” Mr Welford said.

“Staff are concerned about the incidence of cancer amongst current and former staff.

“There have been a number of different types of cancer diagnosed amongst former and current staff at the school in recent years.

“Most recently, there have been three staff members diagnosed with breast cancer since November 2007.

“As a result of concerns raised by staff, Education Queensland is working with Queensland Health who will conduct a preliminary assessment of the incidences of cancer amongst staff.

“That preliminary assessment will inform whether any further action is required.

“If there is any evidence that identifies that further environmental investigations are warranted, then an environmental site assessment or other workplace monitoring will be undertaken.

“Ongoing support has been made available to staff and they will be kept informed on the progress of any investigations.

“An information briefing will be provided to staff at the school next week and specialist staff from Queensland Health and an Occupational Physician from Workplace Health and Safety will attend this meeting to address staff concerns.”

There are approximately 113 staff currently working at the school.
