The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
See beyond the disability: Minister
Communities and Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr is encouraging Queenslanders across the State to join in the celebrations for Disability Action Week which starts this weekend.
In Parliament today, Minister Nelson-Carr said the State launch of festivities in Townsville with a big free family fun day focused on showcasing the achievements of Queenslanders and promoting the week’s theme ‘See Beyond the Disability’.
“Communities throughout the State are joining these celebrations with some 100 events and activities, including art exhibitions, open days, karaoke nights, wheelchair dancing and awareness-raising workshops,” she said in Parliament.
“There’s even a world record-breaking attempt in Hervey Bay to line up the biggest scooter and wheelchair convoy, with my Parliamentary colleague Andrew McNamara giving the event every support.
“The symbol of this important week is the butterfly because butterflies undergo a series of amazing changes in their lifetime, free of prejudice, without sight or hearing to guide them.
“A highlight of the upcoming week will be a Butterfly Tree in Townsville which children will be decorating with their own colourful butterflies.”
Later, Ms Nelson-Carr commended Chatsworth Member of Parliament Chris Bombolas for taking the lead and organising a butterfly tree at Belmont State School as part of this Sunday’s Community Cabinet activities.
There are more than 100 Disability Action Week events organised around the State, including the annual Disability Action Week Awards next Tuesday which recognise the hard work and dedication of individuals and businesses who are making a difference to Queenslanders with a disability.
“The Bligh Government promotes Queenslanders with a disability because we recognise they have a valuable role to play, not only in our economic future, but in the very fabric of our community life,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“I invite Queenslanders to get involved and see beyond the disability.”
