Awards for Queensland's wine tourism achievers

A teacher who has designed a resource package on the responsible consumption of alcohol is one of the winners of the inaugural Queensland Wine Tourism Gateway Schools Awards.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said Stanthorpe State High School’s Ann Richardson would receive $1500 to help her implement the package.

“The winning students and teachers of the Queensland Wine Tourism Gateway Schools Awards were announced at a ceremony at Preston Peak Winery in Toowoomba yesterday,” Mr Welford said.

“They will share in $9000 in prize money to help them continue their studies and innovative teaching practices.

“The awards program has been developed through the Wine Tourism Gateway Schools Project with support from government, industry and the tertiary sector.

“The awards recognise excellence in teaching and support students who have shown a keen interest in their vocational education and training studies to remain in the industry.”

Mr Welford said the Wine Tourism Gateway Schools Project, an initiative of the State Government and industry, created career pathways into the burgeoning industry.

“By working closely, with industry students are developing skills which will enable them to work in both the wine and tourism industries,” he said.

“These students and their teachers are being recognised for their enthusiasm, innovation and dedication to pursuing careers in the wine tourism industry.”

The awards include the 2008 Premier of Queensland Award for Wine Tourism, which will give two students $1500 each to undertake vocational education and training in wine tourism.

Awards were presented by Queensland Wine Industry Association President John Heslop. A full list of award winners follows.

Ballandean Estate Award for Wine Science

• Amanda Vidler – University of Southern Queensland Bachelor of Wine Science Degree student will receive $1000 per year for three years to support her study at USQ. Amanda is formerly a Laidley State High School student.

The 2008 Premier of Queensland Award for Wine Tourism

• Robert Cragg – the former Stanthorpe State High School student is completing the Certificate III in Food Processing (Wine) at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism, while gaining industry experience at Rumbalara Wine.
• Rohan Parker – the former Stanthorpe State High School student is also completing the Certificate III in Food Processing (Wine) at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism while completing a full-time traineeship with Gold Grove Estate.

The two students will receive $1500 each to support their study.

University of Southern Queensland Excellence in Wine Tourism Education Award (Teacher awards)

• Alex Van Dorsellaer – The Centenary Heights State High School teacher has proposed a unit of work that introduces Year 10 students to the wine tourism industry.
• Ann Richardson – The Stanthorpe State High School teacher has designed the responsible consumption of alcohol unit and resource package.

The two teachers will share $3000 to assist them implement their innovative industry-relevant curriculum.

Label Competition Recipients

• Winner of the Young Winemakers program label design competition: Dominique Maher of Kingaroy State High School will spend a day of work placement with Mr Labels design and production team and receive a framed set of labels
• Highly Commended: Chris McKay, Kingaroy State High School and Bryton Talman, Maroochydore State High School
