The Honourable Rod Welford

A fast track to health tertiary studies

The transition from school to university has been made easier through a partnership between the Bligh Government’s Queensland Academies and Griffith University.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said Year 12 students enrolled in the Queensland Academy for Health Sciences would be able to fast track their studies through a newly established Health Studies Certificate.

“Completion of the Certificate will give students guaranteed entry into many of Griffith’s health programs including the Bachelors of Exercise Science, Health Science, Biomedical Science and Pharmaceutical Science, Mr Welford said.

“Secondary students studying higher level Biology and Chemistry and the Health Studies Certificate may be entitled to credit for the whole of their first year at Griffith University.”

Students completing the Certificate study the courses Introductory Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology Advanced Systems and Biophysics.

Mr Welford said students could also complete specific International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program (IB) courses at school to gain credit for up to five of the eight first year common courses in the Griffith Health Foundation Year.

“This will certainly give students a headstart on their studies and allow them to fast track into their careers,” he said.

“We need more young people pursuing careers in the health sciences as the need for health professionals is only going to increase.”

The Queensland Academy for Health Sciences was specifically designed to maximise the potential of high achieving students who have identified a potential career path in the health sciences, sciences, academia or research.
