Music industry experts converge on Brisbane for BIG SOUND 2008

Arts Minister Rod Welford today welcomed delegates from around the world to the annual BIG SOUND Music Summit in Brisbane, from 10-12 September.

Mr Welford said the summit was the largest music industry event in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Now in its seventh year, BIG SOUND has established itself as the premier music industry conference in Australia,” Mr Welford said.

“BIG SOUND is produced by Q Music and will be staged at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Fortitude Valley – Australia’s only live music precinct.

“This year’s program features expert panels and forums to discuss business, new ideas, new music and technologies.

“BIG SOUND has become a very important event on the national music industry calendar because of the genuine outcomes for artists and the cutting edge conference program.

Mr Welford said US Billboard Magazine nominated Brisbane as one of the world’s five ‘hot spots’ for contemporary music in 2007.

“The magazine also highlighted the strong outcomes generated through our Government’s investment in showcasing opportunities for artists and market development at events such as BIG SOUND and MUSEXPO,” he said.

“Our Government is also contributing to a sustainable future for the industry with the release of the first contemporary music strategy later in 2009.”

Queensland artists and bands including Bobby Flynn, Resin Dogs and Q Song Award winners the Gin Club will perform showcase sets at BIG SOUND 2008. Influential delegates at this year’s summit include respected Australian music industry veterans Michael Chugg, Michael Gudinski and Triple J’s Richard Kingsmill.

Mr Welford said BIG SOUND 2008 would complement the Valley Fiesta, a three-day free music event from 12-14 September.

“The Bligh Government, through Arts Queensland, provides triennial funding to music industry development body, Q Music, and provided an additional $50,000 industry development initiative to stage BIG SOUND 2008,” he said. “The event also receives funding from the Department of Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial relations.”
