Safety Top Priority at Today’s National Toy Summit

The protection of children from dangerous toys will be a high priority today when representatives from the toy retail industry, government and consumer groups converge on Brisbane for Australia’s first National Toy Summit.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine said the National Toy Summit is the first of its kind in Australia and will aim to develop a roadmap for toy safety.

“The summit provides a great opportunity for everyone involved in toy safety to share ideas and suggestions on how the current system is working or can be improved,” Mr Shine said.

“The aim of the summit was to establish long-term goals that set a clear direction for maintaining high standards in toy safety.

“This can only be achieved through collaboration with all those with an interest in toy safety.

“Focusing everyone on developing a long-term action plan will improve the overall safety of products in the marketplace.”

Mr Shine said he was pleased with the quality of delegates attending today’s summit.

“It’s very pleasing, not only to have representatives from each state, but also a number of overseas delegates, including representatives from toy manufacturers in China.

“There’s no doubt toys from China have caused the greatest number of problems for Fair Trading departments in Australia over the last 12 months and I am pleased we will be able to work with these Chinese delegates on a plan to ensure a safer environment for our children.

“Toy safety is everyone’s business and we must all work together to reduce the risk of injuries to children from toys,” Mr Shine said.
