Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Wanted : Queensland bands to rock US music showcase
Complementing their sponsorship of the southern hemisphere’s premier music event, BIG SOUND, now on in Brisbane from 10 to 12 September, the Queensland Government today launched a recruitment drive for the State’s most talented new musicians and bands to take part in the annual MUSEXPO showcase in Los Angeles in the Spring of 2009.
Minister for Trade John Mickel and Minister for the Arts Rod Welford today called for expressions of interest from local music industry standouts to take part in a Queensland delegation to Los Angeles to attend MUSEXPO 2009.
“In 2009, we are again providing the opportunity for the State’s bands to benefit from the Government’s longstanding relationship with artist discovery and development firm, A&R Worldwide, sister company to MUSEXPO,” Mr Mickel said.
“MUSEXPO is billed as the ‘United Nations of Music & Media,’ and the Government wants to ensure that Queensland’s voice is heard in this important forum for developing the international music industry.
“The LA showcase attracts a large audience of influential music industry players – tour bookers and talent scouts, managers and media companies – from around the world.
“The MUSEXPO event brings together the global tastemakers and leaders in the music, media and technology industries, and provides participating companies and showcasing artists with an opportunity to interact with them, and do business.
“Queensland’s participation at MUSEXPO is key to reaching Trade Queensland’s goal to significantly expand new music industry exports from our State,” Mr Mickel said.
Minister Welford said that State-sponsored MUSEXPO delegations, administered through the key music development body, Q Music, had proven an excellent launching pad for successful Queensland bands overseas.
“The Government began assisting Queensland acts to attend MUSEXPO in 2005, and since that time we have helped more than a dozen musicians and bands to get their foot in the door of the huge US music market,” Mr Welford said.
“Earlier this year we sent our largest ever delegation comprising 27 music industry participants from Queensland to take part in the event, led by The Red Paintings, The Gin Club and Small Mercies which have all since registered successes in the US,” Mr Welford said.
Musicians and bands wishing to apply to take part in the 2009 MUSEXPO can contact Q Music info@qmusic.com.au or visit www.sonicbids.com/QMusicMusExpo09 . You will be required to submit an application form and other supporting materials by 6 October 2008.
