Major technology boost for Fire Service vehicles

The Bligh Government will spend $868,000 on the installation and maintenance of Automatic Vehicle Locators (AVLS) for Queensland Fire and Rescue Service vehicles in Brisbane and the South-East.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said the new technology will complement the new Emergency Services Computer-Aided Dispatch (ESCAD) system.

“ESCAD integrates both the Fire Service and Queensland Ambulance Service communications systems,” Mr Roberts said.

“The Automatic Vehicle Locators are a satellite-based technology that will enable Communications officers to automatically track vehicle positions via computer without using voice radio.

“Currently firefighters need to radio in their location when they attend an incident and return to station.

“The introduction of AVLs will allow Communications officers to see on their computer screens the locations of all vehicles and dispatch the appropriate resource.

“I have approved funding for this valuable initiative. Depending on procurement procedures, I expect installation will commence early next year.

“This is a monumental step forward for the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service.”

Mr Roberts said ambulance vehicles already benefited from the same technology through their Mobile Data Terminals.

“The ESCAD system is a major investment in Emergency Services technology.

“While there have been some teething problems since its implementation in March, the system has had a 99.99% availability rating.

Mr Roberts said after visiting several Communications centres, he believes the installation of AVLs will be a welcome addition.

“As with any major technological change, there is no doubt that the implementation of ESCAD has been a difficult process.

“I’d like to praise both QFRS and QAS Communications staff on their skill and professionalism.”
