The Honourable Judy Spence
Spence: New Surfers Paradise Police Station opens its doors
Surfers Paradise police have moved into their new state-of-the-art home, in the heart of the entertainment district at 23 Orchid Avenue.
Police Minister Judy Spence said the station is now open to the public, with officers ready to respond to the needs of the community.
“The Queensland Government has provided $4 Million to establish this new police station in Orchid Avenue, to provide officers with modern facilities in an ideal location.
“The position of the facilities will place officers in a great position to respond to the unique challenges of policing in south-east Queensland’s second largest city and one of the country’s premier tourist destinations.
“This new station will enhance police visibility in the area and will assist officers in addressing crime and anti-social behaviour.
“Police are now ready for the busy event season, starting with Indy next month, then Schoolies, Christmas holidays and New Year’s Eve celebrations.
“This government committed to establishing this station in 2006 as part of our four year Queensland Police Service capital works plan, and I’m pleased to see we have delivered this excellent new facility on time and on budget.”
South Eastern Region Acting Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor said the new station will be a huge asset to police working in one of Queensland’s most dynamic areas.
“The new station will give the Surfers Paradise Division the opportunity to focus more clearly on their immediate area. It’s the ideal location from which to stage policing operations in the heart of the CBD,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Taylor said.
“While the facility at 68 Ferny Avenue will remain the Regional Headquarters and house a number of District Units/Sections, the new station places us in the centre of one of Australia’s most significant tourist precincts.”
“The new station will become the centre of policing operations in Surfers Paradise and will operate mobile, all-terrain vehicles and push bike patrols, traffic operations and foot patrols in the Division.”
The station will house general duties and intelligence officers. It features a charge area, interview room, space for administration and conferencing and three holding cells.
Police will operate out of the station 24 hours a day, with front counter service available around the clock.
“This new police facility is a clear example of the State Government’s ongoing commitment to providing first-rate policing services that focus on public safety, and cater for the region’s rapid growth,” Ms Spence said.
