Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
Police Minister Judy Spence and Member for Broadwater Peta-Kaye Croft today officially opened the new Broadwater Police Beat.
Ms Spence said since the beat opened its doors in June, police have been working with local residents and businesses to prevent crime and boost community safety.
“This new beat represents a $600,000 investment by the Bligh Government to bolster policing services in Santa Barbara and surrounding areas,” Ms Spence said.
“The beat is a huge asset for the community – providing improved access for residents and businesses to their local officers, and fostering community partnerships.
“This new beat is the second neighbourhood police beat in the Runaway Bay Police Division (the other is at Biggera Waters) – and the 14th in the South Eastern Police Region.
“Statewide we now have 59 neighbourhood police beats, providing the grass roots community policing focus that beats like this foster.
“Beat officers, Senior Constable Michael Harriss and Senior Constable Alan Wilkie have already been working hard to build ties with the local community.
“Both men bring many years of experience working as police officers throughout the Gold Coast District and it’s great to see the community has welcomed them into this neighbourhood.”
Ms Croft welcomed the boost to policing in her electorate – one of Queensland’s fastest growing areas.
“This beat highlights the Bligh Government’s commitment to providing the growing Santa Barbara, Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove communities with quality services and facilities.
“I know residents are very pleased to have Senior Constable Harriss and his wife Eleisha (also a Senior Constable) living in the neighbourhood, on the beat site – their presence provides great reassurance for locals.
“Since the beat opened in June, Senior Constable Harriss and Senior Constable Wilkie have had a strong presence on our local roads, cracking down on dangerous drivers and hoons.
“They have also been working hard to improve community awareness about home security and vehicle security – initiatives which will help us to maintain low crime rates in this wonderful area.”
Acting Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor said: “Community-oriented policing is vital to our day-to-day duties.
“Police Beats enhance the development of partnerships in community policing as well as improve the overall safety of local residents.
“This police beat will help us improve our ability to serve the community as a Police Service.”
