Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Central western councils benefit from Main Roads contracts

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt today announced four central western Queensland councils had been awarded contracts totalling more than $4 million to reseal local roads.

Mr Pitt said the contracts had been awarded to the Barcoo, Boulia and Diamantina shire councils and the Barcaldine Regional Council.

The projects involve the resealing of sections of the Diamantina Development Road and the Muttaburra-Aramac Road.

"The works being carried out under these contracts form an important part of Main Roads' commitment to maintaining a safe road network," Mr Pitt said.

"Resealing of the current surfaces will improve travelling conditions and improve safety. The department regularly resurfaces roads to maintain, preserve and restore the quality of the road surface."

Funding had also been provided for other roads in the area including the Eyre Developmental Road (Bedourie-Birdsville) and the Kennedy Development Road (Winton–Boulia).

Mr Pitt said awarding the contracts to local councils emphasised the Queensland Government's commitment to continue maintaining regional roads.

"By engaging local councils to maintain roads throughout Queensland, Main Roads is able to maintain employment in rural areas throughout the state,” Mr Pitt said.

"Ensuring we have local staff with the right skills, expertise and knowledge to maintain roads in their own areas is vital for Main Roads to continue connecting Queensland."

Preparation works will begin in coming months.
