Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Service medals for 16 volunteers: interstate operations recognised
Long-serving State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers and members who helped clean up after the NSW Central Coast floods have been recognised in a ceremony at Logan.
Member for Springwood Barbara Stone and Member for Woodridge Desley Scott joined Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts in paying tribute to the selfless contributions made by the area’s emergency services volunteers.
“I’m honoured to be able to present 14 Meritorious Service Medals and Clasps and two National Medals worth a combined total of over 230 years’ experience,” Ms Stone said.
“They are a wonderful example of the experience, skill and dedication our SES volunteers possess.
“Whether its during times of natural disaster, like the floods we saw earlier this year, or for critical deployments such a search and rescue, SES volunteers are selfless when it comes to giving back to the community.”
Ms Scott said medals for Southeast Region volunteers who were deployed interstate last year were also presented.
“Last year NSW was inundated with severe storms and flooding," Ms Scott said.
“Along with hundreds of others, SES volunteers from this area answered the call – leaving their families and jobs to help NSW agencies prepare for and clean-up after a severe weather event.
“I applaud their willingness to help others in times of need.”
Mr Roberts said last week he launched the 2008 SES Recruitment campaign.
“This is an important initiative to ensure the SES can continue to provide a safe and efficient response to natural disasters and search and rescue operations,” Mr Roberts said.
“I would encourage anyone who is considering or who has ever thought about joining the SES to speak to their local unit, ring 1300 369 003 or visit www.emergency.qld.gov.au/ses.”
“Congratulations to all medal recipients.”
