The Honourable John Mickel
Mackay student wins industry accolade
CQ University student Alex Nesevski has been highly commended for his role as a Queensland student ambassador in an awards ceremony at Parliament House in Brisbane on Wednesday night .
The 2008 Queensland Education and Training International Awards for Excellence, hosted by Trade Queensland’s Queensland Education and Training International, brought together the leaders and high achievers of the industry. Award winners ranged from individuals such as Alex, to Queensland’s large universities.
Alex was rewarded for his efforts in promoting Queensland as a study destination on a recent exchange to Louisville in the United States, as part of his Bachelor of Jazz Studies course.
Judges were equally impressed with Alex’s academic performance and pursuit of extra-curricular activities while on exchange.
Minister for Trade John Mickel said it was students such as Alex that were helping to develop Queensland’s profile internationally in the burgeoning international student market.
“Alex is a perfect example of how students on outbound exchange programs are helping to establish ties with foreign universities and students, who often develop an interest in visiting the countries of their fellow students,” Mr Mickel said.
“This helps our industry to go from strength to strength, which confirms our position as the Smart State, and contributes to the growth of what is already Queensland’s third largest export industry.”
The awards had an expanded range of categories this year attracting new competitors, with entrants from Cairns, Rockhampton, Mackay, Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts all competing for the accolades.
Mr Mickel said the wealth of experience and talent at work within the sector was worthy of the recognition that the QETI Awards provide.
“It’s also a great opportunity to bring together the leaders from the various sectors that comprise the industry, so they can share ideas and help move things forward,” he said.
