The Honourable John Mickel

Education and training sector recognises its best

Queensland’s burgeoning international education and training industry has celebrated its best and brightest at the 2008 QETI Awards for Excellence at Parliament House on Wednesday night.

The awards, hosted by Trade Queensland’s Queensland Education and Training International, recognised the individuals and organisations that have made outstanding contributions to Queensland’s $1.6 billion industry in the last 12 months.

An expanded number of categories attracted some new competitors, with entrants from Cairns, Rockhampton, Mackay, Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts all competing for the accolades.

Minister for Trade John Mickel said the quality of entries reflected the wealth of experience and talent at work within the sector.

“This year’s awards have again emphasised the skills and dedication that our international education sector draws upon,” Mr Mickel said.

“The industry not only makes a significant contribution to Queensland’s reputation as the Smart State, but also to our economy as the State’s third largest export industry.”

Griffith University received recognition for its international profile, taking out the prestigious Education and Training Award.

In winning the Education and Training Award, Griffith will automatically progress to the National Export Awards to be held in Melbourne in December.

Mr Mickel said that while successful, the big universities were not the only winners on the night.

“The 2008 QETI Awards were much more diverse than previous years. It was great to see the Brisbane North International School Alliance and CQ University also receive accolades,” he said.

“It’s also a great opportunity to bring together the leaders from the various sectors that comprise the industry, so they can share ideas and help move things forward.”
