Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts

Residents urged to prepare for heavy rain, strong winds

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts says residents in the South-East corner should prepare for an un-seasonal storm which is expected to hit the region later today.

Mr Roberts said Emergency Management Queensland have advised that the Bureau of Meteorology has predicted heavier rainfall and stronger winds to develop throughout the day.

“The weather activity we are expecting is usually more common during the summer months but the SES is always prepared to respond to people who require assistance,” Mr Roberts said.

“There is the potential for this weather system to affect a number of regions and advice from the bureau suggests SES members from the Sunshine Coast, through Brisbane and down to the Gold Coast may have a busy night ahead of them.”

There are a number of steps families can take to prepare themselves and their properties:

  • Keep listening to your portable radio and watch the BOM website (http://www.bom.gov.au) for weather updates.
  • Secure any boats and move all vehicles and bicycles under cover.
  • Bring children and pets indoors and remain inside until further advice is given.
  • Clear your property of all loose items. This means putting outdoor furniture, children's toys and gardening equipment inside or undercover.
  • Secure all external doors and windows.
  • Do not attempt to drive through flood waters or play in swollen creeks

“SES members go through rigorous training to work in arduous conditions to assist others,” EMQ Director of Disaster Operations Mike Shapland said.

“If your roof starts leaking during a storm or a tree hits your house please do not attempt to fix the problem on your own, you may end up injuring yourself.”

Mr Roberts said anyone needing SES assistance during this event and any flood or storm should call 132 500.

“Since its introduction in July 2007, the 132500 Hotline has received over 27,000 calls for assistance.

“I’d like to commend our SES volunteers and all Emergency Services personnel for their dedication during these storms.”
