Rural and Remote Women shaping Queensland’s Future
Regional and rural women are helping shape the future of Queensland at today’s Rural Women’s Symposium in Roma.
As part of the Bligh Government’s Blue Print for the Bush more than 80 women from all regions of the state gathered to share their experiences of living in rural and remote areas.
Premier Anna Bligh attended the Symposium, which was a joint project of the Department of Local Government and the Office for Women.
Minister for Women Margaret Keech said it was a great example of the Bligh Government working in partnership to improve the quality of life for rural Queensland women.
“This is about giving rural and remote women a stronger voice, and learning how we can help improve the lives of their families and their local communities,” she said.
“We’ve extensively consulted with women from all over the state in the lead up to this event, to ensure the issues that matter to them most are on the agenda at this forum.
“We did online and hardcopy surveys, along with holding 24 workshops to ensure even those who weren’t able to be here today have had their say.
“What we have learned from this already is how much women value the quality of lifestyle and sense of community in regional and rural Queensland.
“They also highlighted the excellent job opportunities and career pathways available to them.”
Ms Keech said seeking input from local women was vital to achieve a sustainable future for rural and remote communities.
“We know that these women are often the glue that holds their communities together,” she said.
“The Bligh government welcomes a chance to discuss their issues and experiences.
“Information gathered will help us plan for the future by developing projects and initiatives that support the attraction, re-attraction and retention of women into rural communities.
“We want to jointly develop ideas and create solutions that improve the liveability of rural communities.”
A ‘Rural Women’s Report Card’ was also released at the forum, this document outlines the Bligh government’s achievements, ongoing programs and future plans for region and rural women’.
