Call for turtle conservation volunteers at Mon Repos

The State Government is calling for volunteers to lend a hand at the Mon Repos Conservation Park near Bundaberg.

Minister for Sustainability Climate Change and Innovation Andrew McNamara encouraged applications from people interested in working “night shift” during the upcoming marine turtle nesting season.

“Mon Repos hosts the largest number of nesting endangered loggerhead turtles in the South Pacific Ocean,” Mr McNamara said.

“From November to March each year thousands of people come from around the world to view nesting and hatching marine turtles in their natural environment.

“It’s a spectacular experience,” he said.

Mr McNamara said the volunteers at Mon Repos were an integral part of its success.

“Volunteers provide visitor information, staff the main entrance and gift shop, conduct children’s activities and assist rangers with tours and turtle research.

“Visitors are always impressed at the way the local community rallies to ensure their visit is unforgettable.

“Volunteering is a great chance to become part of a dedicated team, with enthusiastic members helping to protect and conserve our vulnerable turtles.”

Volunteers need to make a firm commitment to the program which runs from November to late March, donating one evening a week from 6:45pm to 11pm.

The EPA provides training in October so volunteers are prepared for the start of the season in November.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Mon Repos Rangers on (07) 4159 1652.

Applications close on Friday 19 September.
