Landscaping starts on Pioneer High's $950,000 multi-purpose centre
The first tree of the landscaping that will surround Pioneer State High School’s $950,000 refurbished multi-purpose centre was planted today (Tuesday 2 September).
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford, said the refurbishment of Pioneer High’s former assembly hall was a demonstration of the Bligh Government planning for and managing growth in the region.
“The landscaping will complete the revamp of the hall which has been converted into a multi-purpose centre capable of housing the school’s 900 students,” Mr Welford said.
“The assembly hall was refurbished with a sprung wooden floor, roof, walls, lighting and mechanical louvres for cross-ventilation for a variety of school and community uses.
“Moveable goalposts means the centre can be used for a variety of sports such as basketball, badminton and volleyball.
“The sprung wooden floor is also perfect for the school’s renowned dance program, particularly jazz and modern dance styles.
“Now the centre has walls, school assemblies can be held in all weather conditions.
“And new lighting means members of the community can use it for functions.”
Member for Mulherin, Tim Mulherin, said the State Government had contributed $570,000 through the Smart Schools Subsidy Scheme and $96,700 through the School Community Development Fund to the multi-purpose centre.
“I congratulate Pioneer High and its Parents’ and Citizens’ Association for contributing $257,000 to the project,” Mr Mulherin said.
“Your contribution is an investment in the future of the students and the community.”
The Smart Schools Subsidy Scheme encourages teachers, parents and local organisations to work together to identify and plan facilities that benefit students and the community.
“School communities around Queensland have done a lot of hard work and our Government is pleased to assist with the funding,” Mr Mulherin said.
The State Government allocated a further $532 million in the 2008-09 State Budget to continue to modernise and build schools across Queensland.
