‘All aboard!’ Trade Queensland helps to deliver major Queensland-Korea yacht training deal
Southern Cross Yachting has sealed a joint venture deal with Korean partners Yacht n School to open a major sail training centre in Korea.
Minister for Trade John Mickel said that Trade Queensland’s assistance helped to seal the deal that will see this Manly-based business provide sail training to hundreds of Korean students, to be delivered in Queensland and in Korea.
“The deal was sealed as part of trade mission that I led in June with representatives of 15 Queensland marine businesses to attend the inaugural Korea International Boat Show,” said Mr Mickel.
“It underlines the value of the Queensland Government’s export agency, Trade Queensland, and Ministerial trade missions in helping to sell our Smart State businesses and industries overseas.
“This export deal will launch Southern Cross Yachting in Asia with their first overseas franchise. The company will provide basic sail training to students in Korea.
“The company will also provide advanced course training, including the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate, for Korean students in Queensland giving them the skills required to sail large charter boats and superyachts,” Mr Mickel said.
“The company already has successful marketing strategies in place to attract overseas students from the UK and Europe. Southern Cross Yachting’s global success shows that Smart State knowledge-based businesses can be highly competitive on an international scale,” Mr Mickel said.
Southern Cross Yachting Managing Director Mike Job, who participated in the June trade mission with Minister Mickel, said that the help the company had received from the State Government was key to the success of this recent Korean training deal.
“This is a great example of industry and government working together for the benefit of all.
“We were originally put in contact with our Korean partners by Trade Queensland at the international business centre at the 2008 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, and the credibility of having Minister Mickel with us in Korea in June helped enormously in closing the deal,” Mr Job said.
