$2.3M upgrade for North Coast boaties

Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Boaties on the Sunshine Coast and Fraser Coast will benefit from a $2.3 million investment in new and upgraded recreational boating facilities.

The funding boost is part of the State Government's $29 million in new funding for the 2008-09 for boating infrastructure across Queensland, including more than $10 million for Maritime Safety Queensland services.

Transport Minister John Mickel said the $29 million to be spent on boating improvements compared to only $21 million that will be raised in revenue from boating registration fees during the same period.

"Queenslanders have always had a love of boating and making the most of this state's wonderful coastline, rivers and inland waterways," he said.

"With more than 222,000 registered recreational vessels, Queensland now has the largest recorded number of recreational vessels of any State in Australia.

"We are therefore experiencing growing demand for new and improved ramps, pontoons and better navigation channels, and this is being further impacted by rising industry costs " Mr Mickel said.

The Minister said the recreational boat registration fees increase taking effect from October 1 will provide the funding necessary to meet the rapidly growing demand for improved infrastructure in the Sunshine Coast and Fraser Coast areas and across the whole State.

"This means new and upgraded boat ramps, pontoons and dredging of popular waterways for Queensland's recreational boaties," Mr Mickel said.

The $2.3 million of projects for 2008-09 on the Sunshine Coast and Fraser Coast include:
