The Honourable Neil Roberts
New fire vehicle for North Mackay
North Mackay fire station has welcomed a new fire appliance worth over $500,000, Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said.
The Mercedes Atego Type 3 Appliance became operational in late July.
“The appliance is fitted with the latest firefighting and road crash rescue equipment,” Mr Roberts said.
“It will be of great benefit to the fire and rescue service team in the Mackay area.”
Mr Roberts said the Atego replaces one of the station’s former appliances.
“That truck remains operational and will be used as a spare appliance by the entire area should one be needed.”
The Joint Emergency Services Facility at North Mackay is also undergoing a facelift, with planned additional enhancements worth $350,000 currently being undertaken.
“Enhancements to the facility include a new training facility, a new shed to house vehicles, and updating site access to improve operational response.
The State Government is investing heavily in the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service.
“In 2008-09 the QFRS has a $397.9 million budget – an increase of $37.7 million on last year.
“As part of the record budget, the QFRS will purchase 30 new vehicles.
“That’s on top of the 31 purchased last year, bringing the total fleet to 486.
“The Government’s also spending $20.9 million on capital works, including building three new stations at Redland bay, Burpengary and Nerang.
“The Bligh Government is committed to planning for and managing growth in demand for fire services across Queensland.”
