Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Service medals for 30 long-serving volunteers
Twenty-eight SES members and two Rural Fire volunteers have received medals for long-service at a ceremony in Mackay.
In town for the Bligh Government’s Community Cabinet, Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts joined Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt in presenting the awards.
“I’d like to congratulate all today’s medal recipients,” Ms Jarratt said.
“Our SES award winners today represent around 400 years of service – a great example of the experienced, dedicated volunteers Queensland has at the ready.”
Ms Jarratt said volunteers like Charles Farrow of the Mackay SES group, who today received his 30 years service medal, were an inspiration to the community.
“Mr Farrow and all our SES volunteers do a wonderful job.
“Whether its during times of natural disaster, like the floods we saw earlier this year, or for critical deployments such a search and rescue, SES volunteers are selfless when it comes to giving back to the community.
Mr Roberts said it was also important to acknowledge the efforts of the Rural Fire Service.
“As well as the magnificent efforts of our SES and other volunteers, I’d like to congratulate Fred and Lawrence Wales of the Mia Mia Rural Fire Brigade, who today received their 30 year service medals,” Mr Roberts said.
“Both have been firefighters since 1978, delivering a much-needed service to their community.
“I believe volunteering brings out the best in Queenslanders, and I urge anyone considering joining an Emergency Services volunteer organisation to make contact with their local Group Leaders and get on board.”
