Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford

Last weeks of Picasso & his collection exhibition

Arts Minister Rod Welford has urged Queensland audiences not to miss the exclusive Picasso & his collection exhibition now in its final weeks at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).

Mr Welford said with the exhibition closing on September 14, there were only a couple of weeks left for audiences to experience the collection of art works that inspired Picasso.

“This extraordinary exhibition features not only 100 key works from Picasso’s personal art collection but more than 80 works by the master himself,” Mr Welford said.

Picasso & his collection has already attracted more than 160,000 visitors from across Queensland, interstate and overseas.

“This equates to a daily average of more than 2000 visitors, which is quite impressive considering the enormously successful Warhol exhibition attracted roughly 1800 visitors each day.”

Mr Welford particularly encouraged Queenslanders not to miss the educational and cultural opportunities available, including those for children, young people and families.

“From the free Picasso-inspired art making activities in the Children’s Art Centre to the stimulating Contemporary Media Lounge, children and young people have the chance to learn from Picasso and find their own creative inspirations.”

Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said the Gallery’s Up Late program of musical performances and ‘show and tell’ talks had been a popular way for audiences of all ages to experience Picasso & his collection.

“The final Up Late on September 12 will feature a special performance by a much-loved Queensland musician, Kate Miller-Heidke,” Mr Ellwood said.

The Queensland Government has supported the exhibition through Queensland Events Corporation and the Queensland Government’s Exhibition Indemnity Scheme.
