Whitsunday funding windfall delivers new day services centre
Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced $500,000 in funding to build a new day services centre in Cannonvale, boosting learning and recreational opportunities for people with a disability living in the Whitsunday region.
The announcement reinforces the Bligh Government’s commitment to improving services in the Mackay-Whitsunday region.
“The $500,000 in funding for Whitsunday Flexible Respite Care will help build a new day services facility opposite the new Centro Shopping Centre, on the direct bus route between Proserpine and Airlie Beach,” she said.
“The new purpose-built centre will offer people with a disability a place to socialise and develop a range of new skills, while increasing the service’s capacity to provide group and individual programs to support quality and independent lifestyles.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said day services involved a range of activities for people with a disability, including pre-vocational classes, recreational and leisure pursuits, and life skills development.
“This funding represents a significant investment by the Bligh Government in the disability sector and is a direct response to calls from local non-government organisations to boost day services,” said the Minister.
The grant will enable the service to provide more opportunities and choices for people with a disability, ensuring they have access to quality care, as well as meaningful and educational activities.
Whitsunday Member of Parliament Jan Jarratt said the funding boost would support local people with a disability and help them participate in the community and enjoy access to quality services, including accommodation, respite and education.
“Ultimately more day service places mean more opportunities for residents with a disability to receive greater care and enjoy a better quality of life,” Ms Jarratt said.
