Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
Sport Minister Judy Spence today presented a cheque for $5 million to Logan Mayor Pam Parker, for the development of the Logan Metro Multi-Purpose Indoor Sport and Recreation Centre at Heritage Park.
Ms Spence joined with Member for Logan, John Mickel, to turn the first sod on the $17 million project, which will provide the people of Logan with first-class sport and recreation facilities.
Ms Spence said: ”The Queensland Government is pleased to provide $5 million towards this project, through the Q150 Legacy Infrastructure Program, which is assisting councils throughout the State to create long lasting legacies of Queensland’s 150th Celebrations next year.
“I congratulate Logan City Council on its commitment to this project which will provide a great long-term asset for the local community.
“The Multi-Purpose Indoor Sport and Recreation Centre will establish Logan as a hub of sport activity – ready to train the next wave of Queensland’s sporting greats.
“At 7,500 square metres, the centre will be the size of a big undercover football field, configured into three indoor multipurpose courts suitable for basketball, netball, volleyball, futsal and badminton.
“The multi-purpose sports centre will provide young people in Logan with the opportunity to get involved in sport, as well as attracting top level athletes to train at the venue.
“Once completed, the centre will meet international competition standards and will become the new home of the Logan Thunder Women’s Basketball Team.
“The Queensland Government is proud to support this Q150 sports project in Logan, so that Queenslanders in this area can enjoy the benefits of being healthy and active.”
Member for Logan John Mickel welcomed the establishment of the centre in his electorate.
“I welcome the commitment of both the State Government and the Logan City Council to construct this fabulous new sport and recreation centre in Logan. It is an excellent example of us working together to build tomorrow’s Queensland, today.
“Maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle is very important. Obesity levels are a concern in every community and a facility such as this will help our local community.
“This facility will include gyms, rooms for aerobics and martial arts spaces to cater for everyone from grass roots players through to elite athletes.
“Queensland performed outstandingly well in the Olympics this year and this facility aims to provide a breeding ground for Australia’s next generation of Olympians ensuring Queenslanders, particularly those from Logan, are leading the way.”
Logan Mayor, Cr Pam Parker, has welcomed the cash injection from the Queensland Government's Q150 Legacy Infrastructure Funding Program to assist with construction costs.
"This centre is being constructed to international standard including a 2000 seat air conditioned sports auditorium, with all the technical requirements for outside broadcasts, so it will be a great starting point for our Olympic hopefuls in years to come.
"We will have a full range of community programs and sports activities available to cater for all age groups including, holiday sports activities and fitness programs for children, weekly sports competitions for juniors and adults, through to fitness and falls prevention programs for older adults.
"We are confident that this quality sports centre will also be the catalyst in attracting a range of sports events to Logan and South East Queensland.
"In addition, the centre will offer educational and employment opportunities to Logan students by providing access to industry traineeships in sport and recreation, fitness, and hospitality.
"This is a really exciting project for Logan and one which we hope will result in one of the youngest cities in this State also being known as an important sports capital of Queensland.
"If Brisbane or the Gold Coast wins a bid for the next Olympics or Commonwealth Games, we'd like to think Logan would be one of the venues that would have a key part to play."
Sumner Park builder, Sommer and Staff Construction, has commenced preliminary works on the site.
