State Government recognises Toowoomba’s community heroes

The Queensland Government today recognised the exceptional contribution of several members of the Toowoomba community with Blueprint for the Bush Community Hero Awards.

Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine presented three awards on behalf of Local Government Minister Warren Pitt at a ceremony at Highfields today.

Mr Shine said the awards recognised those Queenslanders who had gone above and beyond the call of duty to make their community a better place to live, work and raise a family.

“The Community Hero Awards are a Blueprint for the Bush initiative to honour and celebrate our fellow community members who continuously demonstrate tireless effort in making a difference to the lives of those around them,” Mr Shine said.

“Lyn Wagland works tirelessly not only for her community of Pittsworth but for regional tourism and the Women’s Local Government Association. She also volunteers for Meals on Wheels and is involved in a mentoring program with young Pittsworth school students.

“Lee Turner has done a superb job in raising thousand of dollars local athletes to compete overseas, including in the Paralympics and Youth World Games. Lee also raises much-needed funds for organisations such as Angel Flight, Police Blue Heeler organisation and the Roma Swimming Club.

“Today, we were also very pleased to recognise Derek Tuffield. He is a tireless volunteer for sport and the community in the Toowoomba community. He is heavily involved in coaching junior sport and actively promotes and encourages involvement and support for many multicultural, disadvantaged groups and families.

“These shining members of the Toowoomba community are people who make us all proud to be Queenslanders.”

Mr Pitt said the awards were an opportunity for the Queensland Government to thank and recognise community-minded Queenslanders, as well as demonstrate the Government’s commitment to building stronger communities through increased liveability, sustainability and prosperity.
