Mackay residents support abused and neglected children
Mackay residents have rallied to support local children and young people who have been abused or neglected by their parents – with around 40 people expected to become foster carers.
Child Safety Minister Margaret Keech said the Bligh Government’s $15 million foster and kinship carer recruitment campaign had attracted close to 100 enquiries in the Mackay and surrounding areas.
“We expect around 40 new carers from the region, with many of them expected to be approved foster or kinship carers by January,” Mrs Keech said.
“It’s a sad fact that more than 260 children and young people in the Mackay/Whitsunday region could not live safely at home because at least one or both of their parents have abused or neglected them.
"I cannot thank our wonderful foster and kinship carers enough for showing these children the love they deserve and helping to turn their lives around.
"Child protection is a tremendous responsibility and the Bligh Government needs more carers to shoulder this responsibility.
“I applaud the people of the Mackay region for taking up the challenge by indicating their interest in becoming a carer.”
The Bligh Government has allocated almost $590 million this year to the Department of Child Safety.
Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin said said the Bligh Government’s campaign would provide essential services for Mackay children who are in need of family care.
“While it is encouraging to see so many people put their hand up to become a carer, we always need many more,” Mr Mulherin said.
“Foster and kinship carers are real community heroes – people who deserve recognition.
“We need to find more people who can open their hearts and homes and offer at risk children the love and care they deserve.
“Any amount of time you can devote to being a foster carer will make a difference in a child’s life – whether it’s a few hours a week, a few days a month or providing full-time care.”
