Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
South Burnett Regional Council receives $170,000 in disaster funding
Amended version
South Burnett Regional Council will receive more than $170,000 in funding for repairing flood damage that occurred to local road infrastructure in early 2008.
Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said the council’s road network had received considerable damage as a result of floodwaters undermining road structures.
“The majority of the damage was caused by road submergence that resulted from flood waters that occurred during the storm season,” Mr Pitt said.
“The reliance on local road networks by regional communities meant that this damage had a significant impact on accessibility and transportation in the area.
“The financial burden of this natural disaster would have disadvantaged ratepayers if the South Burnett Regional Council was left to foot the bill.”
“As a result, the State and Commonwealth governments have contributed $179,900, with the regional council contributing $50,000 towards the repair work.”
Mr Pitt said the funding was provided through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements program, a joint State and Commonwealth initiative.
