Attorney-General Names New Supreme Court Justice

Brisbane-based Barrister Peter Applegarth SC has been appointed to the bench of the Supreme Court of Queensland.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine said today’s Executive Council has approved Mr Applegarth’s appointment and he will sit in the Brisbane Supreme Court.

“Mr Applegarth was admitted as a solicitor in 1983 and has been in full time practice as a Barrister at the private bar since 1986 and is eminently qualified to take up this position” Mr Shine said.

“He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2000 and has practised in a wide range of civil and public law litigation.”

Mr Shine said Mr Applegarth has appeared in the High Court on a range of cases and his areas of practice include professional negligence, commercial litigation, insurance law and media law.

“Mr Applegarth has also appeared before various Commissions of Inquiry including the Fitzgerald Inquiry and the Commission of Inquiry into Queensland’s Public Hospitals,” he said.

“In 2007 he chaired the Marine Board of Inquiry into the abandonment of an ore carrier in the Gulf of Carpentaria during Tropical Cyclone Nelson.

“Earlier this year Mr Applegarth was appointed as a member of an expert panel chaired by the Honourable Glen Williams AO QC to advise the Bligh Government on the establishment of a new civil and Administrative Tribunal for Queensland.”

Mr Shine said Mr Applegarth will be sworn in next week.
