Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
The Department of Emergency Services has signed a contract to purchase land for the new Nerang Fire Station.
Member for Gaven Phil Gray said the announcement delivers on the State Government’s 2006 election commitment.
“I went to the 2006 election promising the people of Gaven a new fire station, and that’s what the Bligh Government will deliver,” Mr Gray said.
“A contract has now been signed, clearing the way for the Government to purchase land in Beaudesert-Nerang Road.
“Securing the right parcel of land that was on the market has been a difficult process.
“I’m pleased that the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service will now acquire land that is deemed appropriate to meet operational demands for the area.”
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said the station would be built at a total cost of $3.75 million.
“While this process has taken some time, it is very important that the Fire station can be built on land best suited to the Service’s operational needs,” Mr Roberts said.
“$2 million has been allocated to the project this financial year for land purchase and the start of construction.
“I’m advised the tender process will begin in January, with construction hopefully starting early to mid-next year.
“This facility will provide important fire and rescue services to one of the State’s major growth areas.
“It’s great to see the ball rolling on this important Emergency Services infrastructure project.”
Mr Roberts said in 2008-09, work will start or be completed on three new fire stations (including Nerang) and 11 replacement or redeveloped QFRS facilities (including Southport) with funding of $20.9 million.
