The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Sunshine Coast over-50s are dusting off their dancing shoes and warming up their vocal chords, with the Sunshine Coast Senior Superstar competition now open.
Seniors Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the third annual event promised to be a show-stopper with four heats, twice as many as last year, culminating in the grand final in November.
Ms Nelson-Carr said she was delighted to announce $10,000 in Queensland Government funding for the Sunshine Coast competition, which will help to showcase the talents of older people and spread the message about active ageing.
“More than 400 people attended the grand final in Maroochydore last year, with nine unique acts competing for the title of Senior Superstar,” she said.
“It was a tough choice between the many singers, musicians and other performers, but it was lip-synching duo ‘The Great Pretenders’ who won over the crowd with their covers of Cher and Tina Turner.
“I am confident this year will uncover just as many talented and energetic performers, who all prove that age is no barrier when it comes to doing what you love.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said Queensland seniors were firmly in the spotlight this week as part of Seniors Week 2008, which runs from August 23-31.
“Seniors Week was launched earlier this month during a Fun Day and Expo at South Bank Parklands, which saw people of all ages come together in celebration of older people and their great contribution to our community.
“Events will be taking place throughout Queensland as part of Seniors Week, so I encourage everyone to get out there, get active and get involved in an activity near them.”
Senior Superstar Sunshine Coast auditions will be held on 1 October at Living Choice, Twin Waters. Four heats will subsequently be staged with the grand final on 16 November at the Caloundra RSL.
