Senior singing sensations celebrate Seniors Week in style

Brisbane over-50s are preparing to see Seniors Week off in style with the Grand Final of Seniors Superstar to be held this weekend.

Seniors Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said a total of 12 finalists will compete for the title of Senior Superstar at the gala finale at Brisbane City Hall on Sunday 31 August, after being selected from more than 100 performers in eight suburban heats and two semi-finals.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the Bligh Government was pleased to provide $15,000 in sponsorship funds for the annual talent quest, also supported by the Brisbane City Council, which began in 2005.

“Senior Superstar showcases the incredible energy and talent many older Queenslanders possess,” she said.

“This year’s entrants are especially diverse, with dancers, singers, musicians, comedians and poets all vying for superstar status.

“I’m also pleased to see past performer Olive Webber return as a special guest at the grand final, following her 101st birthday on Friday [29 AUG].

“Olive wasn’t able to compete this year as she says she is too busy!

“Happy birthday Olive — and thank you for showing us that age is just a number and shouldn’t stop anyone from doing the things they love.”

Brisbane City Council’s Family and Community Services Chair Geraldine Knapp said this year’s search for Senior Superstar had been the biggest and best yet.

“The talent and variety on show has been exceptional and I encourage everyone to come along to the grand finale to support this year’s finalists,” Cr Knapp said.

More than 1000 people are expected to attend the Senior Superstar grand final at Brisbane City Hall from 2pm, marking the last day of Seniors Week 2008 which runs from this Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 August.

Ms Nelson-Carr said Seniors Week was about bridging the gap between generations and celebrating the achievements of older Queenslanders.

“All those who entered the Senior Superstar competition are wonderful role models, helping to promote positive attitudes towards seniors and ageing, as well as the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle,” she said.

“Congratulations to all entrants and best wishes to those taking part in the grand final next weekend.”
